Three airports serve the western Riviera for private flights from London, and they could hardly be more different. Nice Côte d’Azur is a full international airport that takes any business jet at almost any reasonable hour. Cannes-Mandelieu is a compact business aviation field a few minutes from the Croisette, with limits on aircraft size and opening times. Saint-Tropez La Môle is a short strip in the hills that only smaller aircraft, flown by specially approved crews, can use. Choosing between them comes down to three questions: how big is the aircraft, when will you arrive, and where are you staying?

Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE)

Nice is the default for good reason. It sits on the water just west of the city, with long runways, dedicated business aviation terminals and every service a private flight needs, from border control to catering. Every class of aircraft can use it, from a turboprop to an ultra long range jet, and its opening hours are the most generous on the coast.

From the airport, central Nice is 15 to 20 minutes by car. Monaco is about seven minutes by helicopter, or 40 minutes and more by road. Cannes is roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car, and Saint-Tropez around 20 minutes by helicopter or well over an hour by road, far longer on a summer Saturday. The flight from London takes about 1 hour 50 minutes in most jets.

Cannes-Mandelieu (CEQ)

Cannes-Mandelieu is the closest airport to Cannes itself, about ten minutes from the Croisette, and a favourite with travellers bound for Cannes, Antibes or the villages in the hills behind them. It suits turboprops, light jets and midsize jets well. The trade-offs are real, though: the airport restricts the size of aircraft it accepts, keeps limited hours, applies noise rules, and its apron fills quickly in May during the film festival and on summer weekends.

For most light and midsize jets, Cannes is a straightforward choice when the timing works. For a super-midsize jet the operator checks whether the specific aircraft is permitted, and large-cabin and long-range jets normally use Nice, completing the journey by car or helicopter.

Saint-Tropez La Môle (LTT)

La Môle is the most convenient airport for Saint-Tropez and the most demanding to use. Its runway is short and the approach through the surrounding hills is challenging, so only smaller aircraft can operate there, in daylight, with crews holding the specific approval the airport requires. Arrivals from outside Schengen, London among them, are accepted only from 1 July to 15 October, and slots are limited in high summer.

Turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12, and some light jets, can land at La Môle when the operator and crew are approved. For anything larger, the usual choices are Toulon-Hyères, about an hour by road, or Nice followed by a helicopter of around 20 minutes to Saint-Tropez. Many guests simply prefer the helicopter: it skips the coast road and lands close to the village.

Matching the airport to the aircraft

The quickest way to decide is to start with the aircraft. A party of four in a light jet heading to Cannes will usually land at Mandelieu. A family of eight in a super-midsize jet bound for a villa near Saint-Tropez will usually land at Nice and take a helicopter. A group of twelve in a large-cabin jet lands at Nice whatever the final address.

Timing is the second filter. If you are leaving London after work on a Friday, check the opening hours at Cannes and La Môle carefully: arriving after closing means a diversion to Nice and a longer drive. Nice also handles the late arrivals and early departures that the smaller airports cannot.

Other addresses on the coast

For Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, Nice and Cannes-Mandelieu are both around 20 to 30 minutes away by car, so the aircraft usually decides. For Cap Ferrat, Villefranche and Beaulieu, Nice is closest, about 20 to 30 minutes by road. For the villages behind Cannes, such as Mougins and Valbonne, Mandelieu often saves time, and for the hills around Saint-Tropez, La Môle or a helicopter from Nice are the quickest ways in.

Border control and luggage

London is outside the Schengen area, so all three airports carry out passport checks on arrival, and every guest needs a valid passport. The operator submits passenger details before departure, which keeps the formalities brief.

Luggage deserves a thought at the smaller airports. Light jets and turboprops have modest holds, so a week of luggage for six may not fit, and helicopters have their own weight limits. If you are travelling with golf bags, cases of wine or large suitcases, say so when you request a quote; your advisor can send a separate car for the bags when needed.

When the smaller airports are busiest

Cannes-Mandelieu is at its fullest during the film festival in May and on summer weekends, and La Môle through July and August. On those dates, booking the aircraft early is only half the job: the slot at the airport matters too. Nice, with more space and longer hours, is the reliable fallback, and a helicopter keeps the final leg short.

The short answer

  • Nice for Monaco and Nice itself, for larger jets, and for late arrivals.
  • Cannes-Mandelieu for Cannes, Antibes and the hills, in a light or midsize jet within its hours.
  • La Môle for Saint-Tropez in a turboprop or approved light jet; otherwise Nice and a helicopter.
