For most of the year, a private flight from London to Nice can be arranged at a few days’ notice. Three periods are different. From mid-May to early June, the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix bring a concentrated rush of aircraft to the Riviera within a few weeks of each other. Through August, the whole coast is at its fullest. These are the dates to plan early, and to plan well.

The Cannes Film Festival

The festival runs for about two weeks in May. Cannes-Mandelieu, the airport closest to the Croisette, fills first, and its limited hours and apron space make slots hard to find around the opening days and the closing weekend. Nice takes the overflow, with transfers by car or helicopter.

If you are attending, book the aircraft and the airport slot together, and consider arriving the day before the opening or the screening you are there for. Larger jets will use Nice regardless, so the transfer is part of the plan from the start.

The Monaco Grand Prix

Grand Prix weekend, held in early June since 2026, is one of the busiest weekends of the year for private aviation in Europe. Nice handles a great many business jets over a few days, parking is limited, and many aircraft drop their passengers and reposition to other airports, returning to collect them after the race. Helicopter transfers to Monaco are heavily booked.

The pinch point is Sunday evening, when a large share of visitors leave at once. Departing on Monday morning is usually easier and far more relaxed.

August

August is the height of the European summer. Families travel, villas and yachts fill, and Friday and Sunday flights between London and the south of France are in constant demand. It is not a single weekend but a month of busy days, so the advice is straightforward: book as early as you can and stay flexible about the day.

The heaviest days tend to be the Fridays at the start of the month and the Sundays at the end, when families travel at the edges of the school holidays.

Why prices rise on these dates

On peak dates, more people want aircraft than there are nearby. Operators price accordingly, minimum stays or round-trip conditions become common, and aircraft may have to fly in from elsewhere in Europe to serve London. Parking limits at Nice and Cannes also mean jets often drop passengers and leave, adding positioning flights that show up in the price.

None of this makes a peak weekend impossible. It simply rewards the traveller who decides early, accepts a little flexibility and lets the aircraft and the airport be chosen together.

It also explains why two quotes for the same weekend can differ widely: one operator may have an aircraft based at Farnborough with nothing to do on Sunday, while another has to fly a jet in from Geneva.

Empty legs around peak weekends

Peak weekends do create one opportunity: flights in the opposite direction to the crowd. Aircraft that bring guests south on a Thursday or Friday often return to London empty, and many fly south empty on the Sunday or Monday to collect them. If your plans run against the flow, a peak weekend can produce a well-priced one-way flight.

Other dates worth knowing

A few more occasions bring smaller surges. Easter is busy on both sides of the Channel. Late June marks the start of the summer pattern, with Friday departures filling quickly. In early September the yacht show season brings visitors to Cannes and Monaco, and the last weekends of the school holidays see heavy northbound traffic. None of these rivals August, but each is worth a word with your advisor when you are planning.

Five ways to make a peak weekend easier

  1. Book early: for the Grand Prix and August weekends, weeks or months ahead is sensible.
  2. Fly a day before or after the crowd.
  3. Choose the Riviera airport by aircraft size and arrival time, not only by distance.
  4. Reserve helicopter and car transfers when you book the flight.
  5. Consider one-way trips if the aircraft would otherwise wait on the coast for days.

A sample plan for Grand Prix weekend

Take a party of six from London to Monaco for the race. A sensible plan is to fly from Farnborough on Thursday or early on Friday, when slots at Nice are easier, with a helicopter transfer reserved alongside the flight. The aircraft drops the party and repositions, then returns for a Monday morning departure rather than Sunday night. The positioning is priced in from the start, so there are no surprises, and the party avoids the busiest hours at both the heliport and the airport.

How far ahead to book

There is no fixed rule, but the pattern is consistent. For Grand Prix weekend and August Fridays, the most suitable aircraft based around London are often committed weeks ahead, sometimes months. For the film festival, the tighter constraint is usually the slot at Cannes-Mandelieu rather than the aircraft. For an ordinary summer weekend, a week or two of notice usually leaves a reasonable choice, and outside these dates a few days is often enough.

If your dates are fixed

Sometimes the date is the point: the race, the premiere, a family celebration. In that case, the earlier we know, the better the choice. Your advisor will hold options as long as operators allow, look at the less obvious London departure airports, and plan the Riviera end around slots and transfers so the day itself runs smoothly.
